The Science Current Event is an on-going assignment. It will continue throughout the year. Each week is worth 10 points. They are due EVERY MONDAY by 2:30 pm that we are in session. (If no school is scheduled for a particular Monday, no article is due, for example: Labor Day or Memorial Day.) Each student was advised of the parameters at the beginning of the school year. They are as follows:
Choose a written or on-line news article that covers any aspect of science. These may include almost anything as long as the student can justify as to why they believe that it is science. The article cannot be more than two weeks old.
This Assignment has three main purposes:
Format Requirements:
1) At the top of the page, right side margin, write Student’s Name, Period Number, and Due Date.
2) List the article information in the upper left
Title of Article:
Author: Last name, First name.
Source: must be italicized.
Date: Month day, year.
URL: use whole www or http.
Example: Title: Artifical Sweeteners May Evict Good Gut Microbes
Author: Ornes, Steven
Source: Science News
Date: October 17, 2014

3) Create your own title. This should be in bold font, intended, and relate to the article.
4) Write three to five paragraphs about the article in your own words! This should include what it is about as well as its impact on the aspect import to the student. Do not just summarize or paraphrase the article. Make it your writing. Tell me what you think about it and write your opinion of the topic.
5) Watch for spelling error, punctuation, and most of all do not plagiarize. Simply restating what the article says will result in lower scores. Make the writing meaningful.
6) Lastly, attach the original article to your paper. Using the website: https://www.printfriendly.com/ (link on my website). Highlight-copy-paste entire URL into white box on printfriendly to create a simplified article. If using a newspaper article or hard copy turn into the bin. I will not accept assignments without the original article.
Submitting the Assignment:
This assignment will always be submitted electronically. When sharing your google document it is crucial you title your assignment as follows:
Period Number, Last Name - Assignment Title.
Example: P3, Gulbrandsen – Current Event 1

Grading:
I will be using the Simple Six standards, which they have been taught previously and are using presently in Language Arts. These standards uses six points to improve writing:
1. Stick to the Topic. 5. Use Descriptive Sentences
2. Use Logical Order. 6. Write to your Audience. Let your personality shine.
3. Use Interesting Words.
4. Use Different Sentence Patterns.
Historically, most of the students who have not received all possible points have exhibited one or more of the following problems:
No Source Listed (-1) Article not attached (-3)
No Publication Date Listed (-1) Article paraphrased by student.
Article not related to Science (-2) No original writing exhibited (-4)
Article not current. (older than two weeks) (-2) Article plagiarized completely. (-10)

- Students today are woefully unaware of the world around them and often out of touch with events that may have a large impact on their lives, both now and in the future.
- Students should realize that science is all around them and is occurring every day. It is not just old history. Recognizing aspects of science is necessary.
